How to Improve Interviewee Recordings

resources Jun 05, 2024

If you have a podcast that you post on video channels like YouTube and interview guests from all over the world, you'll definitely hit a snag - and that's the quality of your guest's audio and video.

In this video, we'll talk about managing expectations and how you can correct your guests' framing, lighting, and getting the perfect audio before you hit record. Remember, it's the interview is all about them and the audience will want to see and hear them clearly to stay hooked.

  1. Improve Camera Position and Angle
    • Adjust the Laptop: Ask interviewees to prop their laptop up to ensure it is at eye level. This helps avoid unflattering angles and provides a more professional appearance.
    • Use Stabilization: If using a smartphone, place it on a stable surface like a bookshelf to reduce camera shake.
  2. Enhance Lighting Conditions
    • Utilise Front Lighting: Ensure that the interviewee is well-lit from the front to avoid silhouettes. Adjust the position of lights or use natural light to illuminate the face.
    • Avoid Backlighting: Minimize backlighting to prevent the interviewee from appearing in shadow.
  3. Opt for Better Equipment
    • Smartphone vs. Laptop: If the laptop camera quality is poor, suggest switching to a smartphone, which generally provides better video and audio quality.
    • Minimise Noise: Encourage the use of headphones to reduce fan noise and echo. Avoid Bluetooth headphones due to their unreliability.
  4. Maintain Eye Contact
    • Guide the Interviewee: Instruct the interviewee to look directly at the camera lens for a more engaging and professional appearance.
    • Use Visual Cues: Suggest placing a post-it note with an arrow near the camera lens to remind them where to look
  5. Optimise Audio Quality
    • Headphones with Mic: Have interviewees wear headphones to prevent audio feedback and ensure clear communication.
    • Mute Non-Speaking Participants: During group interviews, mute participants who are not speaking to reduce background noise and improve clarity.

Applying these tips will help you achieve high-quality virtual interviews, even when dealing with less-than-ideal equipment and setups.
